Cuban Salsa Musicality – Module 1: Theory & Structure

Do you love Cuban salsa and want to understand the music you dance to?

This first module focuses entirely on the musical foundation of Cuban salsa (timba). Instead of dancing, we will dive into the theory, structure, and musical elements that make Cuban salsa unique. Understanding the music is one of the most powerful ways to improve your dancing and develop a more authentic Cuban style.

During this session we will explore:

• The structure of Cuban timba

• How to recognize the difference between timba and other salsa styles

• The different sections within a Cuban salsa song

• The musical elements that create the characteristic energy of timba

• How musical understanding influences the way we dance

We will also listen to and analyse selected timba songs, helping you train your ear and start recognizing the musical patterns used in Cuban salsa.

This module is ideal for dancers who already have experience with salsa and want to develop stronger musical awareness and a deeper connection to the music.

If you would like to learn body movements adapted to the different sections of the music, you can continue with Module 2.

Between Module 1 and 2, you will receive a small “home assignment” to help you practice what you learned in the theory session. This will allow us to follow up and build further on your understanding during Module 2.
